I am Julia Mamaea, the mother of Emperor Alexander Severus, and I lived from 180 to 235 AD.
During his reign, the Roman Emperor Alexander Severus stayed in his gigantic legionary camp, today's Mainz. From this location he defended his world empire against the invading Germanic tribes. Of course, Oberwesel was also a military base at that time, which certainly actively supported this defense.
His mother Julia Mamaea, who accompanied him, tells of her life as a privileged Roman, of the daily threats from the Germanic tribes, but also of the international understanding that existed at that time. She angrily remembers her cowardly murder, which took place in 235 near Mainz. In Oberwesel, however, her tomb monument is said to have been erected.
